Installing BIOS Updates

Add a model-specific BIOS update to DeployR content and a task sequence. The source requires the update command to suppress restarts so the sequence can continue.

Installing BIOS updates as part of a reimaging sequence is not strictly necessary as the automated updates process SHOULD take care of it.

However, as a catch all to ensure they are definitely updated it is useful to add as part of the imaging process. Download the required BIOS update executables from the respective manufacturers for each model and do the following in DeployR.

  1. Add a new Content Item
  • Go to Content Items and Add a new item
  • Give it a logical name. e.g. BIOS Update Asus B5402FEA.
  • Give it a description if desired.
  • Select Application for the Purpose
  • Select Single File for the Type
  • Click Save
  • Open the new item and click New Version
  • Enter a description if desired.
  • Enter the Installation Command Line.
  • ALWAYS prevent the BIOS update from restarting the device. If it does it will break the task sequence.
  • Use the appropriate silent command, as specified for the selected update.
  • For Asus the switches are /VERYSILENT /NORESTART
  • Ignore the working directory
  • Leave the Installation success codes as they are and click Save all changes.
  1. Add the BIOS Update to a Task Sequence
  • Open your Task Sequence and enter Edit mode.
  • Mouse of the Customizations folder and click the New Group icon (small folder icon).
  • Select the new group, and in the Properties tab give it a name of "BIOS Updates"
  • Mouse over the BIOS Updates group folder and click the + plus symbol to add a new step to the group.
  • Select Install Application to add a new step.
  • Select the Install Application step and click the Select Content Item button.
  • Select the BIOS update content item created previously.
  • Now Select the Options tab and on the Conditions tab select Query Builder in the drop down.
  • Enter Model Equals <Full Model Number of the device targeted by the BIOS Update>
  • E.g. Model Equals ASUS EXPERTBOOK B5402FVA_B5402FVA
  • This is the same model number when running the following and as used in the Driver Pack Content Items from an earlier process. Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystem | Select-Object -Property Manufacturer, Model e.g.

Manufacturer Model

ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3402FVA_B3402FVA

  • Adding this prevents the BIOS update from running. It isn't strictly necessary as the BIOS update will detect if it is running on the appropriate model, but this is far more efficient and speeds the process up considerably when you have a dozen bios updates configured in a single task sequence.
  • Repeat for every single device to add a BIOS update package for each model in the BIOS Upgrade group.
  • Add a Reboot step at the end of the BIOS Upgrade group.
  • Mouse over the BIOS Upgrade group and select the + plus icon.
  • Select Reboot
  • Click Save all changes. Your done. It should look something like this. Note each bios update step has a Condition that only allows it to run if the device model matches, with a final Reboot to apply the update.
